چکیده

Feeding experiments were conducted quantitatively to examine the breakdown of mineral grains by earthworm, Eisenia feida, and larva of beetle, Protaetia lugubris insperata. Crushed and sieved test minerals of K-feldspar and/or quartz were mixed with artificial humus that contained no mineral grains. The mixture was fed to the soil animals in the plastic containers. After 1-, 4and 7-day experimental durations, the ingested mineral grains were collected from the casts excreted by the soil animals in each container. Even 1 day after feeding of mineral grains, the casts of soil animals contained finer, rounded mineral grains that were not included in the initial prepared mineral samples. † Present address: Narumi Junior High School, Midori, Nagoya, 458-0036, Japan ∗ Corresponding author: Phone: +81-52-789-4887, Fax: +81-52-789-4770, E-mail: [email protected]. jp (Mitsuo Hoshino)

The effects of host plants on the feeding indices and chemical activities of elm leaf beetle, Xanthogaleruca luteola (Muller) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

ABSTRACT- Elm leaf beetle (ELB), Xanthoga leruca luteola (Muller), is considered as one of the most important and destructive phytophagous pests of Ulmus species in the north of Iran. In the current study, the effects of three host plants including Ulmus carpinifolia, U. carpinifolia var. umbraculifera, and Zelkova carpinifolia, on feeding indices and biochemical processes of ELB were examined ...

Report of fungal isolates and their efficacy against Rosaceous longhorn beetle, Osphranteria coerulescens (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae)

The Rosaceous longhorn beetle (RLHB), Osphranteria coerulescens Redtenbacher (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is a significant pests of fruit orchard in Iran and it is costly to control it. During an ongoing project on natural enemies of O. coerulescens in Mashhad region, North East of Iran, two isolates of entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) were isolated as natural pathogens on the larvae. The fungal isol...

Biological weathering of sepiolite clay mineral as affected by the activity of an earthworm species )Eisenia foetida(

Sepiolite is an Mg-rich fibrous clay mineral which occurs in agricultural soils of arid regions. Although many investigations have been carried out on the formation and stability of this clay mineral, no information is yet available on the mineralogical changes of this mineral by earthworms. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the effect of Eisenia foetida earthworms on sepiolite wea...

Degradation of Potassium Rock by Earthworms and Responses of Bacterial Communities in Its Gut and Surrounding Substrates after Being Fed with Mineral

BACKGROUND Earthworms are an ecosystem's engineers, contributing to a wide range of nutrient cycling and geochemical processes in the ecosystem. Their activities can increase rates of silicate mineral weathering. Their intestinal microbes usually are thought to be one of the key drivers of mineral degradation mediated by earthworms, but the diversities of the intestinal microorganisms which were...

Interactions over time between cereal leaf beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and larval parasitoid Tetrastichus julis (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) in Utah.

The phenology of parasitism of the cereal leaf beetle, Oulema melanopus (L.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) by Tetrastichus julis (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) was studied in small grain fields from 2000 to 2005 in northern Utah, after release and redistribution of the partially bivoltine larval parasitoid during the 1990s. Host larvae first occurred in May, with peak infestation typically oc...
